about

While I was training to become a psychiatric nurse in Graylingwell hospital in Chichester I saw a poster advertising an evening of improvisation at Bishop Otter College (where the nurse education was based) and of course I had to investigate. This workshop was run by french horn player and music tutor Rod Paton and we instantly hit it off and forged a life long friendship. We started playing together and called the project I.D (Improvising Duo). Both the musical AND the Freudian associations were appropriate! We played at the college and later at the art gallery in Plymouth and at a Green Party event in Bristol. Some compositions were mine and others Rod’s: still others emerged spontaneously between us. Celebration I wrote after the end of Apartheid in South Africa (still relevant now in view of George Floyd and BLM). Rod later composed his monumental “Jazz Mass” in which I played percussion.
Later I played in a second Improvising Duo with wonderful saxophonist Dee Byrne. We played some gigs in pubs around Brighton as well as at Paul Chi’s “Healthy Concerts” concerts in people’s homes. Dee now has her own band Dee Byrne’s Entropi who have releases here on BandCamp and play around London. They are well worth checking out (when the virus lets us see live gigs again!)
