This collection is a part of my musical journey to becoming keyboard player with Dr Space Toad, Captain Sensible and finally the Damned (in 1996) It includes some of our first ever musical experiments when Henry Jaremko and I were about 12 or 13 years old! We messed about with effects, speeded up voices and silly monologues: it was great fun and we called ourselves “Moon Orchid”. Some of the experiments had already been done by people like John Cage in the 50s, but we didn’t know that then. Later we were inspired by my uncle’s introducing us to the world of psychedelia and Prog Rock: we were delighted to get our hands on a delay! (Track three) Then came Punk and New Wave and the “do-it-yourself” ethos encouraged us to write our own songs. Then came the 80s and for me this was a bit of an anti-climax musically. I still followed the bands and artists I liked who were still active then: Zappa, Beefheart, Kate Bush, Gong, the Stranglers, Robyn Hitchcock and the Soft Boys, the good Captain and of course the Damned but I couldn’t find much new music to inspire me. It seemed like “image” had become more important tha music. So I travelled back in time exploring the roots of the music I liked in the realms of Jazz, Classical, Folk and what became “World Music” later on. So this compilation explores those influences, especially those of “Acid Folk” such as the Incredible String Band, Daevid’s solo work, Terry Riley and a touch of the Brit/Americana of Michael Chapman. Quite a bit of it is pretty mellow, but WATCH OUT for the odd bit of complete lunacy in there! ... more
